Managing Your Pregnancy in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Covid-19 has been around for a while now, and we have been able to have a better understanding of the virus. As it relates to the Mother and developing Baby during pregnancy, the transmission of the virus from an infected Mother to the developing Baby is rare. However, placental infection can occur, causing damage to the placenta and the Baby, including stillbirth.

What we have learned so far is:

1. Pregnant Women are at increased risk of more serve COVID-19 illness.

2. The risk of stillbirth is 2 to 4 fold higher in Women with COVID-19 infection during pregnancy.

3. COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all Women who are pregnant, lactating, or otherwise considering pregnancy, unless your personal Doctor is recommending otherwise.

4. Pregnant and recently pregnant Women up to 6 weeks postpartum should receive the third booster COVID-19 shot, after completion of the initial COVID-19 vaccine series.

5. The MRNA COVID-19 vaccines are preferred over the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant, and lactating Women.

6. Completion of a 2-dose MRNA COVID-19 vaccination series during pregnancy might help prevent COVID-19 hospitalization among infants less than 6 months of age.

The evidence shows that the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy can be administered based on the associated risk and benefits to pregnant Women as determined by their Doctors. It is very important to be informed so that we can protect ourselves and our Babies. Stay safe!
